Best interior design tricks to transform your home

Whether you just moved in or are looking for a quick, small home pick-me-up, or perhaps something more meaningful, there are some well-known interior design tricks that interior designers employ that you can also easily do with a minimum Effort and cost. Sometimes smaller things make the biggest impact. It could be the addition of a mirror, a painting, a lamp or even a plant. Maybe you want to soften your walls, brighten up a room, or add some warmth to your living space.

1. Paint smaller rooms in softer, lighter colours to help make the room feel bigger. A room with large windows, light-colored walls and ample use of mirrors not only reflect the natural light that spills from the doors and windows, but the use of mirrors also gives the optical illusion of space, making the room look like Bigger than it really is. On the contrary, darker colours will make a room feel smaller. Even with the abundance of natural light and the strategic placement of mirrors, this room in a darker shade would have a more boxed feel.

2. Use decorative mirrors to add immediate light to your living space.

As seen above, mirrors can also be used to make a smaller space feel larger. For larger rooms or any room with a more limited amount of natural light, mirrors placed directly through the windows will add instant light. Decorative mirrors can be used instead of art to fill vacant wall space. Big or small, mirrors add light and the dimension of your living space.

3. Mix patterns and textures. Mix old and new, expensive and cheap.

There is nothing wrong with placing family heirlooms next to your modern couch. All good interior decorators will tell you that the most important aspect is to improve your home is that it reflects who you are, your personality and your style. The old Chippendale desk that was your grandfather tells a story. Tell the story of your past. The modern couch you fell in love with and simply had to buy also tells a story, your current story, and there is no reason why the present and the past can not coexist together. The same can be said of art. Now you may not want to put a painting of Salvador Dali on the same wall next to a Monet, but there is no reason why they can not be in the same room together. With fabrics such as furniture, pillows, varied colours and patterns can bring light and texture to your living space.

4. Slip into something a little more comfortable! Slip covers often get a bad rap but they are really wonderful things. They can serve as a means of changing the look of your furniture to reflect the seasons. These easily removed coatings allow you to look sophisticated without constantly worrying about getting people to get dirty or spilt on your furniture. Non-skid covers are ideal for rooms frequently used by children. Above the white sofas covered in slip gives the air a casual, comfortable, easy but sophisticated elegance.

5. Wicker Baskets Wicker baskets are an economical and elegant way of adding storage to any room. Baskets can be used to store and display books, architectural magazines and decorations, toys, towels and blankets to name a few. Place couple of small wicker baskets on your kitchen to show and beautifully store your fruits and vegetables.

6. Use what you already have to decorate. We all have items in our possession, probably packaged in boxes somewhere and we have not given them a second look. Your home needs some accessories. Instead of running to the store, take a look at what you already have. Wooden, acrylic, metal or silver trays can be placed on top of luggage trays, tea carts, logs, bedside tables and coffee tables for additional texture and dimension. Arrange the candles on them, the frames or stack books on top of them. The plates can be hung to create wonderful wall art. The art of children’s books can be framed and hung in nurseries, children’s bedrooms or their bathrooms. You will be amazed at what you can do with what you already have!
